It lies in the southwestern corner of the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Long_Valley_Caldera\">Long Valley Caldera<\/a> and consists of about 12 <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Rhyodacite\">rhyodacite<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Dacite\">dacite<\/a> overlapping domes. These domes formed in a long series of eruptions from 110,000 to 57,000 years ago, building a <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Volcano\">volcano<\/a> that reaches 11,059 feet (3,371&nbsp;m) in elevation. During this time, massive <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Dacite\">dacite<\/a> eruptions occurred roughly every 5000 years. The volcano is still active with minor eruptions, the largest of which was a minor <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Phreatic\">phreatic<\/a> (steam) eruption 700 years ago.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-contrast-color has-text-color has-medium-font-size\">Mammoth Mountain also lies on the south end of the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Mono-Inyo_Craters\">Mono-Inyo<\/a> chain of <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Volcanic_crater\">volcanic craters<\/a>. The magma source for Mammoth Mountain is distinct from those of both the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Long_Valley_Caldera\">Long Valley Caldera<\/a> and the Inyo Craters. Mammoth Mountain is composed primarily of <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Dacite\">dacite<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Rhyolite\">rhyolite<\/a>, part of which has been altered by <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Hydrothermal\">hydrothermal<\/a> activity from <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Fumarole\">fumaroles<\/a> (steam
